I hope everyone is ready for riding season.  Our winter is almost over and this fall looks to be one of the best yet for Iron Horse and BMW motorcycles.  We have a great selection of 2007 R1200GSs coming with the newest generation ABS system.  We have one 2007 K1200GT that is not already spoken for and can be spec’ed anyway you would like.  We also have a couple of R1200GS Adventures that we can also build to suit.  We only have a few 2006 RT’s left, and if you get one before the 16th of September, BMW will give you the new Navigator III.

Rawhyde is coming to AZ.  Check out their new website, offering riding and educational opportunities for the on and off-road rider.  We are going to plan an open house near the end of October to showcase the new R1200R.  I am still trying to get a track day lined up for October/November.  I have some of you on a list, but please let me know if you are interested.  I will have all the dates by the next newsletter, so keep an eye out. John

We'd like to share the following info provided by RawHyde Adventures...

For starters this program will be based in Arizona, but our goal is to operate an "experience" in all of the states that have "interesting riding" & We will be adding those other states as time allows.  This first program is called the "Arizona Adventure Experience" and will showcase the incredible diversity of "The Grand Canyon State" From the Saguaro covered hills of Phoenix to the red cliffs of Sedona and on to the forests near flagstaff. You will get a lot of backcountry riding and a great education.  Join us from October 27th to Oct. 30 in the fabulous backcountry of Arizona for the "Adventure Experience"

This program combines a refresher of offroad riding skills and a focus on GPS navigation in the back country.  Over a 3 day period you will learn how to download and use other riders "tracks," how to "Track Back" how to create and use waypoints and routes and much much more... You will also do a lot of "Real world" back country riding under the watchful eye of our instructors and guides!  You will come away from the experience ready to tackle the world on your own.

Ok...You've caught the bug and want a taste of the Adventure!

We can help you outfit your R1200GS with some helpful R1200 Adventure trim.  Add the Adventure winglets and mud guard extension (or beak) to better manage windflow while giving your GS a decidedly unique look.  The winglets, in addition to the Givi GS windscreen, offer superb airflow management and greatly reduce buffeting for taller riders.

You can also increase the comfort of your GS on longer rides by adding the Adventure seat

Ask Tom Kniest for details or come on by and take a closer look at his Adventure-accessorized bike.

Tucson to Banff via GS!
By GS rider and Iron Horse customer, Mike Hoppe

The summer of 2003 found my wife Cindy and I in Northern Idaho on our touring bike.  As planned, she was flying home, but not as planned I was going to meet her in Carlsbad, California instead of Tucson, and had an extra day to get there.  At the last minute I decided to make a run for Banff, Canada and then loop west and down the coast.  The half day that I spent riding in and around Banff set the wheels in motion to return…

Brian Sterrett and I are what you might call perfect riding partners for each other; not only are we able to tolerate each other well but we both like distance, both have GS Adventures, and ride the things in the dirt (sometimes extreme) as much as we can.

Leaving Tucson at 4:30am to beat the heat, we were headed for Bear lake in Idaho, about 125 miles northeast of Salt Lake in the mountains.  Just shy of 1000 miles, we called it a day making it halfway to our destination in Canada.  Backroads up the Westside of the Tetons and some little traveled roads in Montana were the ticket that set us up for crossing into Canada just west of Glacier National Park.

A 70 mile stretch of dirt was the first Canadian soil to change the color of our bikes and we would end up doing over 300 mile of off-road riding in the next 5 days.  Arriving at our timeshare condo at Dead Man Flats just outside of Canmore, we had an overabundance of day rides to choose from, as well as the two day overnighter where we would camp on the Columbia Icefields.

Brian ended up having to return to Tucson earlier than expected so after spending the weekend at the Lunatic Fringe Rally in Calgary, I headed down to Going to the Sun Road in Glacier Park, and then backtracked some remote roads across Montana heading towards Yellowstone.  At the KOA about 50 miles north of Yellowstone, a chance encounter with Al Jesse made for great dinner company and I was able to help him eat his extra bratwurst!

My wife was worried about me solo riding and I explained to her that more than likely I would find some BMW riders migrating from the RA National Rally to Paonia to ride with.  Sure enough, I met fellow solo (his partner had to detour as well) BMW rider Ray Moss in Yellowstone.  It wasn’t until we were looking for a place to stay in Jackson Hole that we discovered that we were both Pastors!  I think God was answering my wife’s prayer for me in a REAL obvious way!

The next stop was the Top of the Rockies Rally in Paonia Colorado. I had not been to that Rally since the early 90’s but it had been my favorite…it’s even better now!  The best part was a few weeks prior I had run into Menachem Lorber at Ironhorse and he told me he was heading up to Paonia…and we were able to hook up there.  He and Jeff Coleman were doing a few days of spirited riding in the area and we all got to hang out on the grass under the big oak trees and eat too much!

I’m already planning next summers Northwest Adventure…either the Kootenay’s in British Columbia or a bit more aggressive schedule to ride the Cassiar highway from Upper Liard to Prince Rupert and then taking the Ferry down to Vancouver Island…let me now if your interested!
